The national highway traffic safety administration issued a statement that will require all new 2018 vehicles to have rear view backup cameras. The rule was proposed back in May 2016 but it’s now a requirement for new 2018 vehicles. “The NHTSA estimates that 31% of the deaths among kids under age 5 and 26% adults over 70 and are caused by vehicle back up incidents. “We are committed to protecting the most vulnerable victims of back-over accidents — our children and seniors,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement.”
I know personally rear view accidents are a sad and unforgettable experience. When I was in third grade, one morning my mom was rushing me to get to school because I was running late. I remember it was Friday the 13th. Its considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. While my mom was backing out the car, out of the garage, our new puppy named “Chubby” got out and wondered out to the driveway. He meandered his way to the back of the car without us realizing it. While in reverse, I felt like we had gone over a hump. I instantly knew what had happened and I was brought to tears. My poor Chubby puppy died being run over. 23 years has passed since this happened. These accidents happens all the time. With rear view safety cameras this doesn’t have to happen to anyone anymore.
I am happy that this law went into effect. This is an advantage for new car owners. This will prevent tragic accidents for dogs, babies, elderly. Safety is a priority and its important to protect the most vulnerable victims.
